Peshawbestown

-A A +A

The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians established Peshawbestown in 1852. Nearly 130 years later, in 1980, the tribe petitioned for, and received, federal recognition, allowing it to exercise treaty and fishing rights, and other self-governing services. Leelanau Sands Casino opened in 1984, enhancing economic and community development. By 2005, the tribe had grown to over 3,983 members spanning six counties.
