Commercial Building (Laredo National Bank)

-A A +A
Laredo National Bank
1916, Adams and Adams. 417–419 Flores Ave.

The San Antonio firm designed the three-story, monumentally scaled Beaux-Arts building with fluted Ionic columns and pilasters. Its construction was made possible by the wealth generated from the discovery of oil and gas in Webb County in the early twentieth century, and the transfer of funds by Mexican citizens during the years of revolution. The bank was headquartered at this location until 1957. It is now a retail venue.

Also around the square at 508–516 Flores Avenue, the Fritz Werner Building of 1890 is one of the cast-iron storefronts manufactured in St. Louis that came to Laredo by rail, and modernized its architecture.
