Heinrich Bierschwale House

The construction of this limestone house is particularly well documented, thanks to the survival of the ledger kept by Bierschwale's descendants. According to the book, work began in May 1872 with payments for rock and digging, and ended in March 1873 with a final payment for carpentry. Heinrich Bierschwale was a teacher and a justice of the peace in the early 1850s, and apparently lived some distance from town, deciding to relocate after one of his neighbors was killed by Native Americans.
