The congregation was organized in 1844 and the Baptist General Convention of Texas was held here in 1848. The church was built of local stone by slave labor. After the church burned in 1955, the exterior walls were rebuilt in the same American Colonial style using the original stone. The church has a wooden pediment and square tower with a slender spire.
