Carl von Seutter, who had worked in James Riely Gordon's firm, created an elaborate version of the Renaissance style for his affluent client Otto S. Koehler. A native of St. Louis and of German descent, Koehler relocated to San Antonio in 1884 to serve as one of the directors of the San Antonio Brewing Association and became one of the wealthiest businessmen in San Antonio. Instead of residing in San Antonio's upscale German neighborhood, the King William District, Koehler chose a building site consisting of an entire block north of the city.
