Hamburg Garden Club (Hamburg Presbyterian Church)

On a corner site downtown and hugging the sidewalk, this small white frame front-gabled church, with an open belfry, displays a fascinating array of simple Stick Style features original to its construction and a 1920 overlay of Craftsman details. Half-timbering patterns on the side walls divide them into horizontal rectangular fields below the windows, which play against vertical fields above. On the rear, the varied panels are accented with sawtooth edges. At the eaves, decorative curved jigsawn brackets combine with typical, plain Craftsman knee braces. The 1920 remodeling of the interior removed the balcony, originally reserved for African American worshipers, to allow space for Sunday School rooms.
