Stateline stands right at the border of Nevada and California. It is difficult to say which side of the boundary is less attractive and more reflective of late twentieth-century throwaway American culture. Stateline's half-dozen high-rise casinos crowd the state line and sidewalks along the highway, exploiting as much of the available space as possible. South Lake Tahoe, California, is a banal strip with motels, shopping centers, fast-food restaurants, and gas stations lining the road for miles. There is rarely a season when this stretch of U.S. 50 is not clogged with cars, as the south shore area attracts skiers in the winter and boaters and campers in the summer. Residential areas are located on the mountainsides above the congestion.
