Albion is another mill community which came to be controlled by the Chace brothers. The designation of this village by the ancient name for Britain indicates the predominant nationality of its original work force, as do the names of the neighboring villages of Ashton, Berkeley, and Lonsdale. Mill operation by a group of local business leaders began in 1823 in buildings which the Chace brothers eventually demolished. They acquired the mill in 1854, adding it to the acquisitions in Manville four years earlier, and incorporated it as part of the Valley Falls Company (see Central Falls) in 1856. They replaced the old stone and wooden mills with a brick mill, which, with the sum of its accretions, is among the larger brick mills surviving in the state.
