Small-scale industrial development at this site under various owners extended back to a sawmill and gristmill established in 1739 by Joseph Edmonds, for whom the village was originally named. A consortium of businessmen under the leadership of Christopher and Charles Lippitt finally erected a shingled mill, which stands today substantially as built.
