Shoreby Hill

-A A +A

First advertised in 1896, Shoreby Hill was developed by a group of St. Louis residents to be a private community, not unlike the private, gated streets of their hometown. By 1898 seven St. Louis families bought water-view lots and promptly built summer homes in a subdivision laid out on a scheme by Bostonian Ernest Bowditch. A second (and eventually a third) tier of buildings, primarily for navy officers, was added between 1912 and 1916, expanding the bounded area to approximately its current size.
