Hearne developed as a major railroad community in the late nineteenth century at the junction of the Houston and Texas Central Railway that arrived in 1868 and the International and Great Northern Railway that arrived after 1870. The two railroads shared a depot in the early twentieth century and continued to strengthen the town's economy as a major regional trade center for cotton. The town is named for the Hearne family, who were early plantation owners in the vicinity.
