Founded in 1887 on land donated by Henry B. Shiner for the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway, Shiner was settled by Czech and German immigrants. Agriculture remains important in the area, along with cattle and poultry. Today the town is best known as the home of Spoetzl Brewery, the oldest in Texas (1909), producers of Shiner Beer, perhaps the finest of the Texas-brewed beers. Brewery tours are available year-round. A fine row of early-twentieth-century facades faces the railroad tracks but the depot has vanished.
