Spring and Vicinity (Harris and Montgomery Counties)

-A A +A

Spring in north central Harris County is an unincorporated extension of Houston's metropolitan sprawl. Anchoring the territory east of I-45, Spring (now called Old Town Spring), a townsite platted in the early twentieth century, was redeveloped as a specialty shopping district in the 1980s. West of North Freeway (I-45) lies the Klein community, identified especially with German immigrant farm families. Anchoring Klein, and challenging it for primacy as the area's identifying landscape, is suburban pioneer Champions, a series of residential subdivisions along Cypress Creek clustered around Champions Golf Club, which opened at FM 1960 W and Champions Drive in 1959. FM 1960 (formerly Jackrabbit Road) is a commercial strip that even by Houston standards is daunting in its length, traffic congestion, and spatial cacophony.
