Deer Park fills in the coastal plain between the east edge of Pasadena and the west edge of La Porte. A railroad-related agricultural development of 1892, Deer Park did not come into its own until 1928 when Shell Oil Company established its oil refinery on the Houston Ship Channel. The former San Jacinto Elementary School of 1930 by Harry D. Payne at 204 Ivy Street (now the Wolters Administration Building of the Deer Park Independent School District) is the community's oldest public building. A critical part of Deer Park's public infrastructure is the pole-mounted outdoor alarm system, which warns citizens to take protective measures when hazardous chemical releases occur.
