Humans have occupied the fertile Ohio River bottomlands that extend from northern Cabell County into southern Mason County for a millennium. As noted in the introduction to this book, Henry Howe recorded in 1845 that “before the plough of civilization had disturbed the soil,” traces of an ancient city were clearly visible at Green Bottom. Later archaeological excavations have pinpointed the remains of this riverside town of the Fort Ancient culture. Now known as the Clover Site, it is a National Historic Landmark.
