Between Franklin and Upper Tract, U.S. 220 traverses a pleasant rural landscape where prosperous farmsteads with numerous barns of various types and dates give evidence of fertile soil and traditional agricultural pursuits. Upper Tract was the site of one of the forts built under the direction of Colonel George Washington during the French and Indian War. Indians attacked in 1758, killing the entire twenty-one man garrison.
