In 1832 Josiah Hedges platted the town that bears his name. Strategically sited on the Warm Springs Road (West Virginia 9), Hedgesville served as a welcome way station for travelers on their way to and from Berkeley Springs. Incorporated in 1854, Hedgesville still maintains a peaceful, pre–Civil War atmosphere. Most of its early houses, clustered around Main and Mary streets, are of log construction, but many now have clapboards or other later siding.
