Last Chance Basin

The Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Company opened an adit, or horizontal access, to its mines here in 1911 in an extraordinarily dramatic gorge. At the portal were several buildings housing machinery, such as compressors for drilling and repair facilities for the ore cars and locomotives. Dormitories, a mess hall, and a changing room served the workers, although some of them elected to live in town in new developments such as those on Kennedy Street within walking distance ( SE024). Several buildings of the portal camp remain, together with marked sites of others along a walking trail, that still offers an evocative sense of mining life.
