The primary source of income for Metlakatla is its cannery. Built in 1891, it was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1918. Located next to the town dock, the cannery is composed of long, gable-roofed buildings extending over the water. As a federal reservation, Metlakatla operates fish traps, the only legal ones in the state.
