Under numerous additions and remodelings lies the vernacular Farm-house of Thomas Skerritt, the founder of Englewood. White shiplap siding, double-hung windows with semicircular head trim, and fishscale shingles in the gables mark the oldest portion of the house, the hub of Skerritt's 640-acre Shadyside Ranch. Landscaped lawns, flower beds, and orchards are gone now, as are the antelope Skerritt used to shoot from his front porch. In their place lies one of the busiest intersections in the metropolis, Hampden Avenue (U.S. 285) and Broadway, which Skerritt laid out with his oxen and plow.
