Darkly romantic murals of mountain scenes adorn the high-backed booths in this narrow bar with a pressed metal ceiling. The murals, according to barstool authorities, were painted, at the rate of a booth a day for a quart a day, by Noel Adams, also known as Chief Sundown. The Punch Bowl, which retains a name from the days when it harbored boxers and their fans, is one of the few old-time saloons in the city to escape urban renewal and gentrification. Originally a cottage, it is scarred with a rough break in the wall where the living room was expanded to become a barroom.
