The year 1961 was Peters and Fields’s annus mirabilis. Five of their buildings were selected for an exhibition organized by the Texas Society of Architects called “Architecture of Merit in the Past Ten Years.” Two of these were published in national architectural magazines, and this, their prize-winning design for the Horizon Home competition sponsored by the Portland Cement Association, was constructed by Odessa contractor U. M. Tadlock as a demonstration of concrete construction. The first house to be built in the Colonial Estates subdivision, it is composed of parallel concrete screen walls that shield interiors from the street, harsh winds, and blowing dust, while embracing sheltered courtyards. The steeply pitched side-gabled roof identifies the house’s living spaces.
