Val Verde County Judicial Center (U.S. Post Office and Federal Building)

-A A +A
1914, James Knox Taylor, Supervising Architect of the U.S. Treasury. 100 E. Broadway St.

This three-story, stucco-faced Italian palazzo-inspired former post office has deep eaves with scroll-cut rafter tails. Doors and windows on the ground story are round arched, and those on the two upper floors have square frames. An emphatic cornice separates the plain walls of the first two stories from the third, which is articulated with Corinthian pilasters between the windows. The post office is now owned by Val Verde County and houses two state courts. The federal courts originally in this building are housed in a graceless Postmodern three-story complex (111 E. Broadway) that dates from c. 2000.
