Church of the Holy Comforter

The Episcopal parish was founded in 1871 and built its first church in 1874. This, the second church, is a steeply roofed Carpenter Gothic building, with a rooftop bell tower and spire. Transepts, with high ridges aligning with the nave, form a T-plan, though the plan is partially hidden by a large east extension. The interior, largely original, has exposed wood rafters with the nave focusing on a richly carved and delicate rood screen of 1905.

A block away at 202 N. Robinson Street is the former Central Church of Christ (c. 1954, Paden Construction Co., designer-builder), a modern complex inspired by the religious architecture of Eliel Saarinen.
