Regions Bank (Lufkin National Bank)

-A A +A
1958, Wilbur Kent with MacKie and Kamrath. 203 S. 1st St.

The arched entrance of Frank Lloyd Wright’s VC Morris Gift Shop (1948) in San Francisco was the model for the bank’s grand entrance. Three concentric and slightly widening arches in white marble rise from a raised planter on the right and descend to the ground on the left, an offset composition used by Wright to generate visual movement. The otherwise windowless facades are clad in a square grid of pink and cream marble in a color gradation that reinforces the grid pattern. The simplicity of the composition is saved by the richness of the materials.

On the next block at 319 S. 1st, the Brazos Transit District operates local and regional bus lines from Lufkin at Jennings Station (2006). The Postmodern red brick scheme is a cross between a train depot and a courthouse. A faux-copper dome on a drum rises from the cross-axial plan.
