Harrison M. and Mattie Whitaker House

-A A +A
1878. 806 W. Houston St.

Tyler attorney Harrison M. Whitaker built this two-story Italianate house on a two-acre site beyond the town. With an irregular T-plan of crossed gables, the two-story frame house has rich Eastlake detailing, including bracketed eaves, scrolled and jigsaw-cut bargeboards, pedimented window lintels, and turned porch posts. Ionic columns were added to the portico in 1910.

The Tyler Little Theater (1939, Shirley Simons) at 1014 W. Houston is a combination of modernist straight parapets and brick stringcourses that link the windows, with Simon’s personal Georgian touches, including small circular windows on the upper corners of the facade and a flared canopy over the entrance.
