Ritz Theater

-A A +A
1930s. 620 E. Houston Ave.

The building’s three-story, white-stuccoed facade extends across the width of three typical commercial lots, dominating the eastern end of downtown Crockett. Roughly one-half of the flat facade is slightly recessed and decorated with blue and red tiles in a stepped pattern and finishes with a stepped parapet. Two small round windows with horizontal comet tail–like stripes balance the other half of the wall. The neon vertical sign at the tallest corner also signals the edge of town. The Ritz was later operated by Schulman Theatres, established in 1926 by Morris Schulman in Bryan.

To the west, adjacent buildings have cast-iron pilasters, richly corbeled brick cornices, and the remains of a pressed-metal facade.
