The original First Baptist Church, erected in 1890 at 500 Pierce Street, was moved to the present church’s premises in 1964. The frame structure retains its essential form and some of its decorative features, though it has experienced alterations. The new First Baptist complex demonstrates Carlander’s considerable prowess at a modernist abstraction of historic styles, as is evident in the church’s fusion of classical and Romanesque, with a triple-arched entrance set deep within a tall surrounding arch. The modest campanile mediates between the church and the equally prominent educational wing, a commonplace of Protestant Evangelical church planning in the 1920s.
