Archer County Courthouse

-A A +A
1892, A. N. Dawson; 1926 remodeled, Elmer G. Withers; 2005 rehabilitated, Harper Perkins Architects. 100 S. Center St.

Fort Worth–based Alonso N. Dawson was awarded the courthouse commission after winning a design competition conducted by Archer County commissioners. The two-story building of locally quarried rock-faced brown sandstone featured round-arched windows. Withers drastically remodeled the courthouse in 1926 by removing the octagonal tower and mansard roofs and adding a third floor with cross gables that emphasize the cross-axial plan. Lintels were substituted for the original arches on second-floor windows. The square building has wide corner bays that stand forward of the building core. The courthouse was rehabilitated in 2005 with funding from the Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program.
