One of the most distinctive buildings on the courthouse square is this Prairie Style–influenced bank in tawny brick. The tall recessed entrance is framed by brick pilasters with inset stucco panels ornamented with geometric pendants of green tile. Above the entrance doors are latticed panels in low relief, and a terra-cotta cartouche is centered on the stepped parapet. The cornice’s rough brickwork may indicate that the original cornice in stone or pressed metal has been removed.
Midblock at 109 N. Rice the two-story brick commercial building was constructed c. 1910 for the J. T. James & Son Up To Date Drug Store. Recessed storefronts and doors are framed by cast-iron columns, and a large bay window dominates the second story. The tall one-story building at 117 N. Rice has an intact c. 1905 Mesker and Bro. cast-iron store-front with cast-iron pilasters and a multilevel pressed metal cornice.
