One of America's ugliest stadiums, stuck in an ocean of asphalt parking, began with Stanley Morse's original two-tiered, 10,000-seat grandstand on the north and west side. In 1961 25,000 seats were added for the opening season of the Denver Broncos football club. The city bought the stadium in 1968 and ultimately expanded it to 75,000 seats. The 1977 addition included the “floating” east side seating, which is hydraulically lifted and moved on a cushion of water to open up the field for baseball. Next door is the better-designed McNichols Sports Arena (1975, Charles Sink and Associates), 1635 Clay Street, an enameled metal oval popularly known as “Big Mac.”
