Frederick Neef of Neef Brothers Brewing Company built this brick Queen Anne Style house. Eastlake bargeboard on the entry porch is repeated on the two-story front bay and in the main front gable, lending symmetry to a house with exuberant and varied detail, including an attic oriel window tucked under the front gable, stained glass transoms in a variety of ornate window surrounds, and curlicues in the wrought iron fence.
The Neef House is the handsomest edifice in the Witter Cofield Historic District, bordered roughly by West 21st and West 25th avenues between Federal Boulevard and Irving Street. In this Denver Landmark District, named for the two men who platted it, most of the 216 structures are single-family 1880s residences. Queen Anne Style dwellings, ranging from cottages to large, elaborate homes, are the most common. Homes built after 1910 are mostly modest bungalows.
