HISTORIC LITTLE WEDDING CHAPEL (BURBAGE-BROCK HOUSE)

By the 1920s Elkton was a hugely popular destination for eloping couples seeking a hasty wedding. A local industry sprang up offering wedding chapel services, ready-to-wear wedding bands, and honeymoon rooms at local inns and hotels. A change in the law in 1938 added a forty-eight-hour waiting period for a license, but exceptions could be made, such as for service members scheduled for overseas transport. The wedding industry remained in Elkton for many decades, but with changing laws its heyday had passed. Of the many Main Street houses with front parlors converted into wedding chapels, this three-bay two-story fieldstone house was one of the last to remain in business, closing in 2017.
