Expansion and reorganization of the National Guard in the early twentieth century led to a spate of armory building throughout Maryland. This armory is a classic example of the type, with a castellated head house building of rusticated Port Deposit granite with octagonal turrets, similar to the ones built in Hyattsville and Elkton. Granite buttresses continue along the side elevations of the large gymnasium, or drill hall, to the rear.
