Although Montgomery Street officially served as U.S. 17 through Savannah beginning in 1935, this building recalls the street’s transformation into a service corridor paralleling the grander West Broad a block to the west. While a number of roadside businesses and two decimated squares reflect the impact of this major thoroughfare, Hollingsworth’s dramatic lattice girder supporting its canopy and its massive arched and gabled metal-frame workspaces celebrate automotive bravado as do few other remaining automobile-era buildings along the street.
