ST. STEPHEN UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

1959, DeWitt S. Dykes Sr. 414 E. Jefferson St.

This historically black congregation replaced its 1902 Gothic Revival building with this L-plan, buff brick sanctuary and educational wing. A short abstracted two-story tower in the ell’s angle contains the entrance, and the sanctuary wing features a white inlaid brick cross and glass-block windows. A brick mason by trade, African American Dykes Sr. (1903–1991) had served as a Methodist minister and administrator. He joined the denomination’s Church Extension office in 1956, his plans being stamped by registered architects. Dykes received his own license in 1970, and practiced independently until 1988.
