Lorman never grew beyond its few platted blocks, but the wooden Lorman store and its wide front porch have continued to attract travelers on busy U.S. 61. The building’s tall false front hides a front gable and imparts monumentality. Flush siding and baseboards finish the store’s front like an interior room, and the Doric pilasters framing the double-leaf glazed entrances are a surprising classical detail. The Cohn family ran their general store until 1965, with a warehouse at the rear and a cotton gin. Under later owners, the store closed in 1996, but it reopened as a restaurant serving “the best fried chicken in the world” and retains its interior furnishings.
