The Gordon Library was dedicated in 1966 and named for one of the college’s most accomplished faculty members, Dr. Asa Gordon. Anchoring the Technical Sciences core of the university, this cylindrical building serves as a remarkable architectural statement of the college’s transition from a largely segregated and self-sufficient school to a modern university, utilizing a postwar modernist vocabulary by mainstream white architects. This building’s circular plan and minimalist yet rhythmic exterior of rough-textured concrete panels alternating with abstract piers and narrow vertical windows make the design among the boldest of the Bergens’ work.
