The Rapids Lodge

Lodgepole slab walls in vertical and diagonal sections adorn the original rustic lodge of this resort. Under a new metal roof, The Rapids still welcomes diners and overnight guests. Laps (for Lapis Lazuli because of his deep blue eyes) Ish, a miner, built the lodge with the help of his son, Guy. Prominent third-story dormers provide a peaked theme repeated in small separate cabins. The little-altered structure sits in a spruce and lodgepole pine grove on the north inlet of Grand Lake, where Ish harnessed rapids with a water wheel and electric generator to make The Rapids the first electrified resort in the county.
