Paired sandstone Ionic columns support the pediment of the entry portico on this monumental one-story temple of tan brick. In the tympanum is a bull's-eye window with compass keystones. The arched windows and oversized keystones are characteristic of the Beaux-Arts classicism espoused by James Knox Taylor, as are the rigidly symmetrical elevations, massive proportions, and fine detailing. The base and front and side steps are gray granite. The post office replaced an outstanding early residence on the block of Main Street known in the late nineteenth century as Millionaire's Row.
