In 1919 the city purchased the Denver and Interurban's Fort Collins operations and dropped the old Woeber cars in favor of lighter, more efficient Birney safety cars. One of these short, open cars, Birney Safety Street Car no. 21, was restored for service in 1985, when the Fort Collins Municipal Railway Society revived streetcar service from City Park to downtown via the grassy median of West Mountain Avenue. For car no. 21 a new barn (1983) was constructed in City Park. The elderly but well-kept Mission Style brick trolley barn (1907), 330 North Howes (southeast corner of Cherry Street), is still owned by the city and used as a storage facility.
