The complex plan of Townfield developed from a simple center-passage house that was lengthened twice and connected to a two-story nineteenth-century wing set at a right angle. An enclosed projection facing the river was added to extend the original passage and provide windows on three sides. Thomas Waterman participated in the restoration when he resided in Port Royal.
