San Juan Avenue Historic District

San Juan Ave. between 5th and 6th sts. (NRD)

This small residential district consists of the east side of San Juan Avenue for the full block and a single house on the northwest corner of 6th Street. One- and two-story masonry houses built between 1896 and 1905 represent a gamut of historical vernacular styles, with uniform setbacks, low retaining walls along the sidewalks, mature trees, and a single remaining stone hitching post disguised as a tree stump. The houses at 509, 521, and 522 San Juan Avenue were designed by John Gwyn, a local architect also responsible for the Chestnut Apartments (1908) at 4th Street and Santa Fe Avenue.
