Presbyterian College Dormitory

1884. Southwest corner of 6th and Cherry sts.

The Reverend George Darley of the Home Missionary Movement founded the Presbyterian College of the Southwest in 1883. This square, three-story frame structure with a mansard roof remains. The old Presbyterian Chapel (1895), Spruce Street between 6th and 7th streets, with its rough-faced rhyolite walls and tall, Gothic-arched, stained glass windows, has been incorporated into a new community church. The New England Protestants who built the college were not well received by Catholic Spanish-speaking locals, and the school closed in 1901.
