Fort Peabody

-A A +A
1903, Colorado State Militia. 7 miles east of Telluride atop Imogene Pass

The union-bashing Colorado State Militia built this rock hut to keep union miners from traveling to Telluride, where scab laborers had been recruited during the bloody 1903–1904 labor wars. Governor James Peabody used such structures and the state militia to crush the Western Federation of Miners. At 13,114 feet, Imogene is one of the highest drivable passes, open only a few months each year but well worth the trip for the scenery and a wealth of mining ruins.
