Fort Vasquez

-A A +A
1835. U.S. 85, 1 mile south of Platteville (NR)

Fort Vasquez, a Colorado State Historical Society Branch Museum, offers exhibits, tours, information, and two WPA murals depicting the fur trade era. The adobe fort is a WPA reconstruction, updated slightly over the years. Once the fort had twelve rooms clustered against the stout walls around a central open plaza. The gunports did not exist in the original, which was built by Andrew Sublette and Pierre Louis Vasquez and abandoned in 1842. Walls 2 feet thick and 14 feet high enclose a space approximately 105 feet north to south and 120 feet east to west, with two corner watchtowers.
