Washington County Courthouse

This overblown red brick four-square with a hipped roof and gabled and pedimented dormers centered in each side is a variant of the basic courthouse design John Huddart used elsewhere, here distinguished by a prominent, domed cupola astride the ridgeline. The small, protruding entry surround is topped by a balustraded second-floor balcony. Much of the original interior survives, including wood-work, high ceilings, and wide, creaking stairs to the second-floor courtroom and third-floor jury deliberation rooms.

Just south of the courthouse at Main and Ash streets is a two-story stone jail with a similar four-square plan that suggests that John Huddart designed it as well. The jail was rehabilitated as the county museum in 1958, and the frame Prairie View Schoolhouse was moved next door as part of the museum complex.
