The original structure of Emmanuel closely followed the standard mid-nineteenth-century rural church, a gable-fronted brick box. The reworking began with a gift in 1905 and then continued with a major building campaign in 1911–1914, led by Nancy Langhorne of nearby Mirador (PI46), who married Waldorf Astor in 1906 and later became Viscountess Astor of Cliveden. The Washington, D.C., architect Waddy B. Wood transformed the modest structure into a substantial building, drawing upon details of several colonial churches, including Christ Church, Alexandria.
