Jefferson County Human Services Center

-A A +A
1990, C. W. Fentress, J. H. Bradburn and Associates. 900 Jefferson County Pkwy.

The circular wings of this 132,000-squarefoot semicoliseum reach out to visitors because, as architect C. W. Fentress put it, “we wanted people who are having a difficult time in life to feel welcomed by it.” The $60 million, four-story complex of brick and glass houses two dozen once-scattered social service agencies. A two-story solarium inside provides circulation and views of a colonnaded, landscaped plaza. Polished maroon granite bands are cut and shaped to complement the golden brick on the exterior, which borrows its color from the grasses of the surrounding foothills.
