The Pape School, established in 1905 by Nina Anderson Pape, occupied an extravagant Second Empire mansion on this site until 1955 and formed the basis for the Savannah Country Day School established that same year, moving into its present facility on the city’s southside in 1960. The current building, occupied by the Independent Life Insurance Company until 1998, was designed by a member of a leading firm in Jacksonville, Florida, and displays a sophisticated play of abstract modernist volumes and planes that contrasts sharply with traditional, revivalist, and classical structures of its neighborhood.
